Classic Tour across Azerbaijan

 

 

 

Day 1

Baku and Apsheron Peninsula Start exploring Azerbaijan with a city tour of Baku, which is one of the oldest and biggest cities in the East for antiquity, territory and population. We’ll visit the Walled City of Baku with the Shirvanshah Palace and Maiden Tower, UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Inner City (Icheri Sheher) has preserved much of its 12th century defensive walls. The 12th century Maiden Tower , built over earlier structures dating from the 7th to 6th centuries BC, and the 15th century Shirvanshah Palace, one of the pearls of Azerbaijan’s architecture. Juma Mosque and the Carpet Museum. We will have a walk in Seaside Park and along Baku Boulevard, the second largest one in Europe. Lunch in a local restaurant, national cuisine Leaving for a tour in Absheron Peninsula. Ateshgah, the Fire Worshippers’ Temple is located in the village of Surakhany. It was built on the land where natural gas burned eternally and worshipped by Zoroastrian believers who travelled from the province of Multan in India to visit this sacred place. These ancient fires are believed to have given Azerbaijan its name, which is thought by some researchers to mean the “Land of Fires”. Visit also well preserved ancient castles of Absheron Peninsula dated 12th-13th c.c. There are several fine medieval castles – one each at Amirajan and Nardaran and two at Mardakan – apparently built for defense by the Shirvanshah in the 14th century. Overnight in Baku

Day 2

Baku – Shemakha – Lahij – Gabala

Depart for the Caucasus Mountains in the northwest of Azerbaijan. The dry landscape around Baku gives way to a densely forested mountain area. Visit the town of Shamakhy with biggest mosque of Caucasus – “Juma Mosque” and Shirvanshah Tombs – “Yeddi Gumbez”. Lunch Drive to Lahij. Lahij represents an original monument of the Persian town-planning and architectural art of an antiquity. It is a medieval city with paved streets and areas, developed system of water drain and water supply. Lahij— is one of known on Caucasus and behind its limits of handicraft-shopping centers. In a XVIII-th century, being as a part of Persia, the city has especially become famous for manufacturing of cold steel and copper utensils decorated with the engraved ornament. Lahij is historical-architectural monument protected by the state. The city is included in the international tourist route on the Great Silk Way. Drive to Gabala. Day 3

Gabala- Sheki

Arrival to Sheki. Accommodation in Hotel. Lunch Start exploring Sheki. Sheki is one of majestic in the past cities of the East and one of the most ancient cities of Transcaucasia. There are many historical and architectural monuments here. Ancient roots have here forge, weapon, jeweler and copper business, potters, tanning, craft, silky – and rug-weaving, joiner’s business and ornament manufacture. Many masterpieces of Sheki masters were known not only in Azerbaijan, but also arrived on the world market. You are waited by visiting of a magnificent Palace of Sheki Khans, rich on exhibits of the main museum of a city, silk shop, industrial complex, shop on manufacturing the tastiest “Sheki pakhlava” workshop on manufacturing of magnificent frescos and exquisite stained glass work and a night in ancient hotel “Caravanserai” where dealers leading caravans on a great silk way since ancient times liked to stop. Day 4

Sheki – Kish – Baku

Visiting of Sheki Bazaar. Then visiting of Albanian Church in Kish Village. It is located approximately 5 km north of Sheki. According to historians, in the 1st century A.D. St. Elishe, a disciple of Thaddeus of Edessa, arrived to a place called Gis, where he built a church and recited a liturgy. The church became the “spiritual center and the place of enlightenment of people of the East. Drive to Baku. Accommodation in Hotel. Dinner Overnight at the Hotel in Baku

Day 5

Baku – Guba

Drive to the North of Azerbaijan, Guba city. Stop for tea pause near “Beshbarmaq” mountain which is very popular between locals as a holy place. Visiting of Guba Baths, Juma Mosque of Guba and Sakina Khanum Mosque. Juma mosque was erected in the 19th century and constructed in typical Guba province style mosques. Inside of the mosque there is a big hall crowned with a huge 16 m diameter dome. Sakina-Khanum Mosque was built in 1854 by the widow of Abbasgulu Bakikhanov. The mosque was built from red bricks and is similar to faceted cylinder. Each facet has a window in the form of a semicircular arch. The top of the facade is surrounded by an original eaves made from small bricks. From top this stately building is crowned with a big white metal dome in the shape of a multi-faceted helmet. The top of the dome is decorated by a graceful thin spike. Lunch Tour to Khinalig Village. There are different views on the history of Khinalig village. On the basis of the investigation of Khinalig ethnos, language and legends, the history is said to date back to nearly 5000 years ago. The people of Khinalig villages consider themselves as ancestors of the prophet Noah. They believe that Noah’s sons – Sim and Kham – migrated to various places in the aftermath of a storm and only Yafet stayed here together with his sons from whom Caucasus nations generated. Cockleshells and stoned fish bones found in the village territory located at an altitude of 2000 meters, the village are shown as proofs of this legend. Overnight in Khinalig or Guba

Day 6

Guba – Baku – Gobustan

Drive to Baku, Accommodation in Hotel Excursion on historical-art reserve “Gobustan”, where rock paintings have perfectly remained, barrows and housing objects dated from X-XIII millennial BC to the middle ages. There are certificates of inhabitants of region of an epoch of the stone age and the subsequent periods in “Gobustan” – Rock drawings, person parking, gravestone monuments, are concentrated there. Nearby is “Gaval Chalan” – original stone- tambourine, representing flat wise established huge plate. It is possible to hear rhythmic accurate motives by knocking on it. It is considered that these sounds accompanied ritual dances and ceremonies. Visiting of “Gobustan” will transfer you to other world, the world of last mankind and will allow you to feel the atmosphere of thousand – year history of this place. Baku Jazz Festival 2011


From 15 to 29 October Baku will host a new Jazz Festival organized by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Culture Fund of Azerbaijan, and Sweet Production Company. Known jazz performers are invited.

Tickets are on sale at the city’s box office of the city, the value is AZN 20.
