Azerbaijan – the land of hospitality and fantastic cousine
Azerbaijan is the land of legendary hospitality and fantastic cuisine. This country would surprise even the most exacting person. Well known writer and traveler Alexandre Dumas describing his impressions during his visit to Azerbaijan wrote: “If you knock on any door in Azerbaijan, say that you’re a foreigner and have no place to spend the night, the owner of the house will immediately give you his largest room and the housewife will prepare for you the main dish of Azerbaijani cuisine “pilaf”.
During last 5 years 125 new hotels have been opened in Baku and in the regions of Azerbaijan. Hilton, Marriot, Four Seasons and Fairmont Hotel - the new symbol of Baku, now open their doors to international guests.
Lahij is a village on the southern slopes of Greater Caucasus of Azerbaijan. Forty types of items related to Folk Art Lahij master craftsmen could create. These skilled craftsmen included painters, tanners, jewelers, blacksmiths, carpenters, carpet makers, engravers, shoemakers and bast shoe makers, sock weavers and others.
All roads begin from Gobustan
The famous Norwegian explorer and adventurer Thor Heyerdahl drew attention to pictures of the boats in Gobustan stating that Gobustan boat with a curved bottom (probably reeds) has no analogues in the world. On the basis of a comparison of Norwegian petroglyphs with Gobustan petroglyphs he concluded that they were derived "with one hand, but different time." As a result of his research Thor Heyerdahl came to the conclusion that the ancestors of the Scandinavians come from the territory of Azerbaijan.
Sheki Khan Palace
The most outstanding and valuable monument of the 18th century, Sheki Khan`s Palace is located in the Sheki town, Northern Azerbaijan. All the windows and doors of the palace were skillfully assembled from pieces of wood and colored Venetian glass, so the light getting inside the palace plays with all rainbow colors. The miniatures of each room have special meaning which shows the riches and power of Khans, their wealth and noble origin.
One of the main attractions is the wintering Pink Flamingos in Shirvan National Park. They arrive from their breeding grounds in Kazakhstan as early as August and leave only in late April or early May. Even about a thousand may be present on Flamingo Lake.
Azerbaijan offers some of the best trekking options in the region. Geographical position and relief of Azerbaijan make it to be one of the inviting countries for trekking lovers. The country surrounded by mountain ranges: the Greater Caucasus, the Lesser Caucasus and the Talysh Mountains that create astonishing sceneary and offer challenging trekking routes trough their slopes and unfolding valleys and magnifient gorges.
Mugam is a tradition of vocal music practiced in Azerbaijan. Mugham songs are often based on ancient Azerbaijani poetry with recurrent themes of love and mysticism, and performances can last for hours. It is difficult to master and notate. Mugam is performed by singer “khanande” with Def, accompanied by Tar and Kamancha performers.
The historical Silk Road was a series of trade routes that crossed over Eurasia for almost two-thousand years. Articles of merchandise included luxury goods from Japan, Korea, China, Central Asia, India, Persia, Caucasus and Mediterranean. By the 16th century, Europe was trading along the Silk Road routes as well. In this way, the Silk Road created an intercontinental think tank of human ingenuity.
